Antonia Spowers

Antonia Spowers was born in Yorkshire and has lived in many places before moving to Wales in 1996. For many years she lived on the edge of the Black Mountains but is currently renting while waiting to build on the edge of Presteigne.

Her work ranges over a wide variety of materials. Their physical properties are important to her and their ability to embody and express ideas. The work relates to landscape in the broadest sense, whether natural, urban and man-made or the interior world. Buried layers, whether underground or under the microscope, also fascinate her.
For some time the properties and behaviour of water were specific themes. Continuity and connection also figured but recently she has started to explore Erosion and ideas of disconnection and imperfection.

Drawing is important to Antonia Spowers though not always as a base for sculpture. Recently she has been drawing hands with a friend and finds it both inspiring and addictive. Paper, glass and acrylic are materials she started to explore when working on water themes as their different properties have watery affinities.

Antonia Spowers' work ranges from commissions and gallery work to residencies both in Britain and overseas.
