Antonia Spowers (1934 - 2020)
Antonia Spowers was born in Yorkshire and lived in many places before moving to Wales in 1996. For many years she lived on the edge of the Black Mountains.
Her work ranged over a wide variety of materials. Their physical properties were important to her and their ability to embody and express ideas. The work related to landscape in the broadest sense, whether natural, urban and man-made or the interior world. Buried layers, whether underground or under the microscope, also fascinated her.
For some time the properties and behaviour of water were specific themes. Continuity and connection also figured but recently she had started to explore Erosion and ideas of disconnection and imperfection.
Drawing was important to Antonia Spowers though not always as a base for sculpture. Recently she had been drawing hands with a friend and found it both inspiring and addictive. Paper, glass and acrylic were materials she started to explore when working on water themes as their different properties have watery affinities.
Antonia Spowers' work ranged from commissions and gallery work to residencies both in Britain and overseas.
