The Welsh Group | Y Grŵp Cymreig

Chris Griffin

Chris Griffin was born in Maesycwmmer, Mid Glamorgan and graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1975. He is a member of the Welsh Group, the Royal Watercolour Society of Wales and has a studio at Oriel Canfas in Cardiff where he is a member of the Old Library Artists Ltd.

The formal qualities of the South Wales landscape provide the cornerstone on which his paintings are built: the disparate and dynamic shapes, the colours and textures of the landscape, are his starting points. Through the painting process colours and shapes sometimes take on a life of their own and the colour schemes become rich and emotional. By scraping and repainting he achieves a worked and textured surface that evokes the rugged landscape. His subjects are the valleys that he knows so well, the chapels, terraces and the steep hillsides. His paintings are a lyrical and expressive statement that celebrate this landscape and its history.
