Gerda Roper
Gerda Roper, Emeritus Professor of Fine Art, was Dean of the School of Arts and Media, and Director of the Research Institute of Design, Culture and the Arts, at Teesside University. She was responsible there for writing the Art and Design submission for the REF (Research Excellence Framework ).She was previously Assistant Dean for Research at Northumbria University with responsibility for 79 PhD students and 12 Units of Assessment for the REF. She was a long term member of the North East Culture Group.

Born in Cardiff, on completion of a MFA from Reading University, she taught Painting from 1975 to 1984 at Newport College of Art with the artists, Keith Arnatt, Ernest Zobole, John Selway, David Hurn, Erika Daborn and many more.

Since retirement from Academia and returning to Wales, in late 2016, she has been working full time painting and drawing.
​
Professor Roper’s work has been purchased privately and is also in public collections (Newport Museum and Art Gallery, Northumberland Libraries, Teesside University, Northumbria University and Contemporary Art Society Wales (CASW)). She was the Patron of the Christopher Dresser Society in North Yorkshire and is now a member of the executive of CASW.

Professor Roper will be giving an open CASW lecture on 19th March 2019 called “A Painter’s Response “, about inspiration and re-cycling images, together with a further lecture on 23rd March to Art Central Friends at Barry Library.
Professor Roper’s work is available to be seen at her studio in Barry Island and on her website.
