Since the 1980s Philip Nicol has exhibited in many galleries and venues in the UK and elsehwere, including Brno, Bratislava, Kuala Lumpur, Ottowa, Canberra, Hangzhon, Stuttgart, Berlin, Limerick, Brussels, the Ikon gallery, Birmingham, Glyn Vivian, Swansea, Spacex gallery, Exeter etc. In 1985 his work was included in The British Art Show which toured the UK.
Also the recipient of many prizes including three at the National Eisteddfod including the Gold Medal in Fine art, and first prize at the University Glamorgan Painting Competition.
He has works in a number of public collection including National Museum Wales, Slovak National Museum, National Assembly Wales, National Library Wales, Newport Museum and others.
He has a long track record of teaching - holding posts at Leeds college of art for over ten years, at UWIC for nine years and part time at other institutions including Chelsea, Cheltenham, Limerick, Birmingham, Liverpool and others Between 2006 - 09 he was external examiner at the university Gloucestershire Fine Art department.
In 2006 he worked, in partnership with Diversions Dance Company and Welsh National Opera, in a production of “Les Illuminations” by Benjamin Britten at The Blue Room at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff.
In the '90s he worked to secure funding and the develop the building refurbishment of Bute Street studios and gallery. Since it reopened he has curated over 82 exhibitions, between 2000 - 2021, which always tried to contextualise Welsh art practice with other practices from further afield. he has now stepped down from that role.
