Newyddion da gan Philip

Newyddion da gan gadeirydd Grŵp Cymru, Philip Watkins:

At the end of September I was officially declared cured of cancer of the oesophagus after 5 years of treatment, operations and monitoring. As a thank you to the nursing staff and surgeons on the Upper Gastric Tract team, I gave them my painting of the waiting area at clinic No.5 at the Heath Hospital, where I'd spent so much time. The photograph shows me with Lydia, my main MacMillan nurse and some of the other staff members.

Jean Walcot

As you know, at the last AGM we passed a motion that Jean Walcot should be made an Honorary Member of the Welsh Group. Jean has been a longstanding member of the group, she has been secretary and has always been an active participant.

I met Jean shortly after joining the Welsh Group, I picked up her work for delivery to ‘Welsh Group at 70’ and as we chatted, I realised that over the years we had both done a number of American residencies. Jean had spent a several months at the Vermont Studio Centre as I had. On that first meeting with Jean, my partner Carole Burns was with me, Carole had also spent time at the Studio Centre, it was where we met. The three of us had that - working in Vermont, an interest in America and American Art - in common.

As most of you will know Jean has moved out of her house into sheltered accommodation at Llys Herbert, Ty Draw Rd, Cardiff, and last Thursday – July 24th – Philip Watkins and I visited Jean to present her with a bouquet and let her know about her status as Honorary Member. The staff at Llys Herbert had organised a brief ceremony for staff and residents which gave us the opportunity to talk about Jean as a valued member of the group and as an artist and we were able to have a coffee with Jean, her daughter and granddaughter after the ceremony.

Jean would welcome visitors and the staff at Llys Herbert would be more than happy to facilitate any visit.
